The brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer featured featured in a number of films and novels including Red Dragon, Hannibal and of course The Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins portrayed the character of Hannibal Lector in all but two of the five films, and actually won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1992. Also according to Anthony he explains that he drew inspiration for Hannibal's voice from HAL-9000, the homicidal computer in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

As for the following costume tutorial it provides you with detailed instructions on how to create the same outfit worn by Hannibal Lector during his transfer from Baltimore State Hospital to Memphis International Airport in Tennessee. This is when he meets Senator Martin and imparts false information as to the identity of Buffalo Bill. Obviously to protect everyone concerned he has to wear a straight jacket and muzzle over his usual orange prison issue jumpsuit.

Muzzle

There are several Hannibal Lector muzzles available to buy. However, if you want to be film accurate this one from Kropserkel is by far and away the most suitable. It was sized and sculptured on a facial life cast of Sir Anthony Hopkins.

The mask itself is fabricated from a specially tinted translucent reinforced fiberglass shell, with adjustable leather/plastic securing straps, and a stainless steel mouth grille. Ironically the images you'll find on the Kropserkel website, except for the first one, are of my own mask, since they altered the original design and my turned out to be the first of the new line.

The muzzle retails at around $120 plus postage and packing, but it is certainly worth the price, since you won't find a better reproduction anywhere else. http://www.kropserkel.com/lecter.htm

Straight Jacket

There is only one key point you really have to check out when purchasing a straight jacket and that is the colour of the band that can be seen around the neck. Apparently each size straight jacket has a different coloured band. For example since I purchased a small sized jacket my colour band was initially red. However, I simply covered the area with some yellow fabric, which seemed to do the trick. This means then that Anthony Hopkins required a large sized straight jacket while filming The Silence Of The Lambs.

The other aspect you may want to consider is the strapping at the back. From what I can gather there are two distinct styles, those with metal clips and those that use webbing straps. As you don't really see the back of his jacket this is entirely up to you, but I must admit the webbing straps are my preferred choice.

If you require a suitable straight jacket, similar to the one above, you can usually find them on Ebay, with the following store being a particularly useful place. The price most often varies between $75 to $15o plus postage and packing. http://stores.ebay.com/Performance-Jackets_Straight-Jackets_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZQ2d1QQfsubZ2QQftidZ2QQtZkm

Orange Jumpsuit

There are several places on the Internet where you can buy a suitable orange jumpsuit, especially when you consider that fact that you don't really see to much of the suit during the film, except for the legs and collar. Also since you can see the collar it may be worth purchasing a plain white round necked t-shirt to go underneath.

Personally I simply bought a pair of orange overalls often worn by mechanics. Then removed any of the labels from the fabric. The following link may be a good place to start. http://www.nextag.com/orange-coveralls/search-html

Boots

Any pair of black steel toe cap boots will work fine, just make sure you cannot see any labels protruding from the bottom of the legs of the jumpsuit/overalls. This particular pair can be found at the following link. http://www.totallyentertainment.co.uk/walklander-black-steel-toe-cap-safety-work--casual--boots---size-8-91011-979-p.asp
